Seven year old John was wearing a pair of blue shorts and a white tee shirt over his bathing suit and flip flops on his feet. John is tall for his age at 4’ 2”. He is out going and whenever he visits his Nanny and Poppy he looks forward to seeing some of the neighborhood children. The children all like John and they look forward to seeing him since their winters are quiet and everyone is busy with school, homework and house chores. The children ask for John when he is not around.
He likes going to his Poppy’s house, especially in the summer when all the boats are out on the lagoon and the barbecuing begins. Nanny and Poppy live on a Lagoon at the New Jersey Shore, a summer vacation spot in the northeast. John and his sister sometime go to Poppy’s for the week end in the summer months. When it gets hot everyone jumps in the Lagoon and plays around. Playing ball, sitting on old tire tubes and hoping the crabs don’t grab your feet. The summers are congested and the winters are less congested. The summers are full of fun for everyone, children and grown ups alike. There is so much to do. You can walk the boardwalk and play many of the games at the penny arcade, spinning wheels, win toys; go to carnivals, swimming, boating, ball playing on the beach and much more. While walking the boardwalk or just sitting on a bench looking at the ocean you can smell the cotton candy, popcorn, hot dogs, taffy and all the goodies that are sold along the way. On one hot August day John and his sister Stephanianne visited for the weekend and they went swimming in the pool. After swimming was over John played with the family Shih Tzu, Princess. Princess is not allowed in the water because Nanny doesn’t want her long flowing hair all tangled and wet. She is smart enough to sit in a shady spot on the deck when she feels it’s too hot. She either goes under the table or in the gazebo, which is the coolest place to be, when it’s very hot in July and August. The next morning John and his Poppy were up bright and early to start their crabbing for the day. Poppy sat on the edge of the dock while John watched as the crab trap and fish lines were thrown in the water. He leaned over to see the bubbles as the trap went under. Princess leaned over and checked too. She leaned too much and fell in. John helped Poppy fish her out and as she shook her body the water gave everyone in site a free shower. They laughed and while pulling Princess out a crab missed her paw by a hair.

Alice and Kim are both sixteen years old. They have been friends since first grade. They do almost everything together, homework, dancing lessons, basketball and they are on the phone as often as possible. Alice is 5’10”tall, 120 lbs., very shapely. She has deep sky blue eyes, blonde hair down to her bra straps. Kim is 5’6”tall, 105 lbs., a little thin but shapely. She has dark brown eyes, black shiny hair cut to her shoulders. On the weekends they take walks in a nearby park. Sometimes they go jogging or bike riding. They love the outdoors with the beautiful flowers in the summertime. In the cold winter months they do indoor games and sports. One beautiful May afternoon the sun was shining brightly and there was a slight spring breeze. A great day for a walk. The girls decided to go walking through the park. Alice heard a rustling sound in some bushes nearby. Her eyes opened wide, her heart started to beat like the banging of drums, she stopped and put her hand against Kim’s chest to stop her from walking on. Alice then put her hands to her lips and motioned to Kim to be quiet. They were scared but curious as most teenagers are. They tip toed toward the rustling sounds. They held hands then stopped in their tracks, they couldn’t take another step. There were eyes staring back at them from behind the bushes. Screaming and running they didn’t want to stop but they did stop for a second to see if the person or animal was following them. They saw nothing so Alice got her nerve back and told Kim, “Let’s go back and see what it is.” “Are you sure you want to go back?” Kim asked. She was still breathing heavy after running away. “Yes, yes let’s go back; I won’t rest tonight if I don’t know what it is.” The girls started back. “If it’s a monster or something we would be dead already.” Kim said “It’s not funny as she looked toward the bushes. She went along with Alice and as they reached the area where the eyes were looking through the bushes they stopped quickly. They hesitated with each step getting closer and closer. Alice spread the bushes with a stick she picked up along the way. As she opened the bushes slowly, “Oh.” She cried. It’s a baby deer with a cut leg. “It couldn’t follow us when we screamed and ran. They went to the boathouse to report the injured deer so it wouldn’t suffer any longer than it had to. The girls went back to wait with the deer until help came. They checked the deer once more and it was lying in the bushes looking at them with sad looking eyes. They started talking how hunters shoot these animals for sport. After a few minutes help came and the girls went walking home. |
